Intervista ukulelata ad Andy Eastwood

• Can you tell us something about your musical background? Come descrivereste il vostro background musicale?

My grandfather used to play his ukulele to me when I was a child; as far back as I can remember, I loved the sound of the uke and knew loads of comic songs. Grandad died when I was only 6, but just before he did, he bought me a cheap uke and that’s where my whole career comes from! My mother is also a singer, and taught me the piano. At school and college, I studied classical violin and went on to get a music degree from Oxford. Many uke players think they don’t need to understand music technically to play the uke, which is kind of true, but I think they are missing out if they don’t make some effort to learn at least the basics of reading music!

Mio nonno di solito suonava l’ukulele per me quando ero piccolo; per quanto posso ricordarmi, amavo il suono dell’uku e conoscevo un sacco di canzoni divertenti. Mio nonno morì quando avevo 6  anni, ma prima di lasciarci mi comprò un ukulele economico ed ecco come iniziò la mia carriera! Mia madre è una cantante, e mi ha insegnato a suonare il piano. Ho studiato violino classico a scuola e al college, prendendo un diploma di musica a Oxford. Molti ukulelisti credono che non serva conoscere la musica per suonare l’ukulele, che in parte è vero, però perdono un’opportunità non facendo neanche lo sforzo di imparare le nozioni base per leggere la musica!

• What’s your favorite music? Do you listen to everything or do you prefer only one kind of music? Qual è il vostro approccio globale alla musica in generale?

 

I try to appreciate all styles for their merits. But I do have a particular love for jazz, swing and comedy songs. And I’m afraid rap and heavy metal don’t mean much to me!

Provo ad apprezzare tutti i generi per il loro valore. Ma amo particolarmente il jazz, lo swing e le canzoni comiche; mi spiace, il rap e l’heavy metal contano molto poco per me!

• How long have you played ukulele? Da quanti anni suonate l’ukulele?

Since I was about 8 – nearly 25 years now!

Da quando avevo circa 8 anni – quindi più o meno da 25 anni!

• Why did you start playing? Come avete conosciuto l’ukulele? Chi o cosa vi ha spinto ad iniziare a suonarlo?

My grandfather’s uke lay untouched for a couple of years after he died, but I always intended to try it out. Then one day when I was 8 or 9, a George Formby movie came on TV, and reminded me to have a go. From that moment on, I was hooked and never put it down.

L’ukulele di mio nonno non è stato toccata per un paio di anni dopo la sua morte, ma ho avuto sempre l’intenzione di suonarlo. Poi un giorno, quando avevo 8-9 anni, uno show di George Formby in tv mi ricordò di provarlo. Da quel momento mi catturò e non lo posai più.

• How did you learn to play the ukulele?  Did you use the internet, books, DVD? Quando avete acquistato il vostro primo ukulele, come avete iniziato a capire come si suona?  Dove vi siete orientati per imparare a suonarlo? Internet, libri, dvd… o altro?

In the 90s, it was very difficult. Nobody was playing the uke! It was very uncool, and you had to really search hard to find anyone else who had any interest in the instrument. Of course there were a few here and there, but without the internet, how could you locate them! I had to teach myself by listening to the George Formby records, and then I found the George Formby Society, which was a marvelous thrill. People who take up the uke today will never realize how hard it was in those days, and the Formby Society deserve great praise for keeping interest in the instrument alive through those years when it was considered very unfashionable!

Negli anni ’90, è stato molto complesso perché nessuno suonava l’ukulele! Non andava di moda, ed ho dovuto cercare non poco prima di trovare qualcuno interessato allo strumento. Certo, c’era gente che lo suonava qua e là, ma non essendoci internet come potevo trovarli? Ho imparato da autodidatta ascoltando George Fromby, poi incontrai la Gearge Fromby Society, di cui rimasi folgorato. Quelli che iniziano oggi con l’ukulele non riescono neanche ad immaginarsi quanto fosse difficile 20 anni fa, e alla Fromby Society va il gran merito di aver tenuto alto l’interesse per lo strumento in quel periodo, in cui era considerato veramente di nicchia! 

• What kind of music do you like to play with your ukulele?  Which size of ukulele do you prefer? Che genere di musica preferite suonare con l’ukuele? Qual è la vostra taglia preferita di ukulele (sopranino, soprano, concert, tenore, baritono, banjolele…)?

All kinds of course, but my personal taste is for the music of the ukulele’s first heyday – the 20s & 30s, on the soprano uke, or banjo-uke. To me the high, bright sound of the soprano is the uke’s true voice – if you want a big uke, play a guitar! But of course I do play guitar too, so I do enjoy my concert size Martin uke!

Di sicuro tutti, però preferisco la musica ukulelica degli albori – gli anni ’20-’30 su soprano o banjolele. Per me il suono limpido e acuto del soprano è la vera voce dell’ukulele, se vuoi un ukulele grande prenditi una chitarra! Comunque suono anche la chitarra, e mi piace il mio Martin concert.

• You’ve surely played a lot of types of ukuleles.  Can you describe to us the differences between them? Voi che avete sicuramente provato diversi modelli di ukulele, potreste descrivermi la differenza secondo voi?

For me the vintage instruments are the best. All stringed instruments improve with age, and the good quality makers of the 1920s were such experts. For me the ultimate uke is a vintage Martin, and I have several of them! They feel alive as soon as you strum them, they ring like a bell.

Per me gli strumenti vintage sono i migliori. Tutti gli strumenti a corda migliorano col tempo, e la qualità dei liutai anni ’20 è da veri intenditori. A mio parere un Matin vintage è il top, e ne posseggo parecchi! Sembrano prendere vita mentre li suoni, sembrano campanellini (hanno un suono molto brillante ndr).

• Which ukulele size do you suggest for beginners? Quale taglia di ukulele consigliereste a chi deve iniziare?

Probably the soprano, but of course it depends what you want to play on it. Guitarists often prefer something bigger.

Probabilmente il soprano, ma di sicuro dipende da cosa vuoi suonarci. I chitarristi spesso preferiscono taglie maggiori. 

• What’s your favorite ukulele brand? Which brand would you suggest for beginners and less experienced players? Oltre alla taglia dell’ukulele, quale marca raccomandereste a chi è alle prime armi e quale a coloro che vogliono uno strumento valido per suonare seriamente, facendo serate dal vivo?

Martin is the top, and in the case of banjo-ukes, Ludwig, Gibson and Abbott. For less experienced players, well… the same! If you are going to buy an instrument, always get the best you can afford. The quality instruments will keep their value if you take care of them!

I Martin sono i migliori, tra i banjolele segnalo Ludwig, Gibson e Abbott. Per i principianti invece… vale lo stesso! Se stai per prendere uno strumento, scegli sempre il migliore che puoi permetterti. La qualità degli strumenti si mantiene intatta se ne hai cura! 

• Which parts of the ukulele are important (strings, wood, bridge…) to increase the quality?  How do we understand if our ukulele is a good ukulele? Quali sono i parametri (tipo di legno, corde, tastiera, ponte, ecc…) che l’ukulele deve avere per essere considerato buono? A quali caratteristiche guardate voi maggiormente?

The quality of  the wood is hugely important, and the fine quality instruments aren’t too thick. The whole body of the instrument needs to vibrate to get a good sound and volume. Always change your strings regularly too, it makes a big difference.

La qualità del legno ha un’importanza enorme, e gli strumenti di buona qualità non sono troppo spessi: il corpo deve poter vibrare per avere un buon suono e un buon volume. Cambia sempre con regolarità le corde, questo fa la differenza.  

• Ukulele has become so popular in Italy and all over the world recently: What do you think about this and what are the reasons it’s growing? Abbiamo assistito, in questi ultimi anni, ad una diffusione crescente dell’ukulele in Italia e nel mondo: secondo voi, a che cosa si deve questo boom?

Partly because it’s a beautiful instrument, and partly because people are so bored of the modern styles of music in the charts now, which have become so meaningless! They want light-hearted music of a type that rock and rap just don’t provide!

In parte perché è uno strumento bellissimo, in parte perché le persone sono stufe di ascoltare musica contemporanea, è così noiosa! Vogliono musica scanzonata, quei tipi di rock e rap non lo sono!

• Do you have any suggestions for ukulele beginners? Che consiglio vi sentite di dare a chi vuole incominciare a suonare l’ukulele, o comunque è alle prime armi?

Don’t use a strap, and play standing up! This way you will learn how to hold the uke properly! And check out George Formby. It doesn’t matter whether you like his songs or not – he had the perfect playing technique!

Non usate la tracolla, suonate in piedi, è l’unico modo per imparare a tenere l’ukulele correttamente! E ascoltate George Formby… non importa se vi piaccia o no la sua musica, ha una tecnica perfetta! 

• Would you like to say something to our ukulele friends? Siamo arrivati alla fine dell’intervista, vi ringrazio per la pazienza, la gentilezza e la disponibilità. Volete chiudere dicendo qualcosa agli appassionati che leggeranno questa intervista?

Keep promoting the uke, keep enjoying it! If everybody played a uke, the world would be a happier place!
