Intervista alla Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

1.  Can you tell us something about your musical background? Come descrivereste il vostro background musicale?                                                                                                    GEORGE: My first musical instrument was the ukulele. I then played the piano and other instruments before playing Hammond Organ in a soul band and the Electric Violin in an Asian wedding band.                                                                                                          RICHIE: Started playing in bands from age of sixteen, guitar being my instrument. Played many styles of music in many bands                                                                                      WILL: Learnt piano when I was young but then took up the ukulele when I was 14 and never looked back. Although I do like the nose flute these days.                                        PETER: I have no musical tradition in my family other than the fact that all my family enjoyed listening to music, I played trumpet and violin as a youth but was not very good!                                                                                                                                                                    GEORGE: Il mio primo strumento musicale è stato un ukulele. Successivamente ho suonato il pianoforte e altri strumenti prima dell’organo Hammond in un gruppo soul e il violino elettrico in una banda che suonava ai matrimoni in Asia.
   RICHIE: Ho iniziato a suonare in un gruppo all’età di sedici anni, principalmente alla chitarra. Ho suonato diversi generi di musica in diversi gruppi.
   WILL: Ho studiato pianoforte quando ero giovane ma ho preso in mano l’ukulele quando avevo quattordici anni e non ho più cambiato direzione. Nell’ultimo periodo mi interessa particolarmente il “hano” (il flauto da naso).
   PETER: La mia famiglia non ha una tradizione musicale, ma ha sempre apprezzato ascoltare la musica. Ho suonato la tromba e il violino quando ero giovane, ma non ero tanto bravo!                                                                                                                                                                         
2. What’s your favorite music? Do you listen to everything or do you prefer only one kind of music? Qual è il vostro approccio globale alla musica in generale?                                           RICHIE: Probably Jazz is my favourite, but I listen to every type of music as long as it's good music                                                                                                                            DAVE: I enjoy music my friends make                                                                                 WILL: I like all kinds of music but particularly old jazz and Motown stuff.                      PETER: I like to listen to many types of music, particularly Jazz when I was younger – now I enjoy opera and good vocal music a great deal                                                               GEORGE: I like music with light and shade between consonance and dissonance. I like monophonic or polyphonic linearity, for example where the melody tells a story. I like music where the harmonic language is playful with pitch relations. I like driving beats but also a steady state of music, sometimes even drones.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        RICHIE: Il jazz è probabilmente il mio genere preferito, ma ascolto qualsiasi genere purché sia buona musica.
   DAVE: Mi piace la musica che fanno i miei amici.
   WILL: Ogni genere di musica, ma particolarmente il primo jazz e le produzioni Motown.
   PETER: Mi piace ascoltare molti generi di musica; quando ero giovane preferivo il jazz, mentre ora considero l’opera e la buona musica vocale altrettanto valide.
   GEORGE: Mi piace la musica che presenta luci e ombre tra consonanza e dissonanza. Mi piace la linearità monofonica e polifonica, per esempio quelle opere in cui la melodia racconta una storia. MI piace la musica dove il linguaggio armonico gioca con le relazioni tra i toni. MI piacciono anche i ritmi più aggressivi e a volte anche la musica elettronica drone.                                                                                                                                                                               
3. How long have you played ukulele? Da quanti anni suonate l’ukulele?                          RICHIE: I still play the ukulele, I started 30 years ago.                                                      WILL: I started when I was 14 and now I'm 41.                                                                PETER: Since 1989                                                                                                       GEORGE: I once played the ukulele for the entire journey from Yorkshire to Cornwall. My family made me promise to be quiet for the rest of the trip after Cornwall.                                                                                                                                                                                           RICHIE: Suono ancora l’ukulele, ho iniziato 30 anni fa.
   WILL: Ho iniziato quando avevo 14 anni e ora ne ho 41.
   PETER: Dal 1989.
   GEORGE: Una volta ho suonato l’ukulele per tutta la durata di un viaggio dallo Yorkshire alla Cornovaglia. La mia famiglia mi fece promettere di stare in silenzio per il resto della gita.                                                                                                                                                                   
4. When did you start playing ukulele and Why? Come avete conosciuto l’ukulele? Chi o cosa vi ha spinto ad iniziare a suonarlo?                                                                                      RICHIE: 30 years ago, because I was interested in playing with the UOGB.                            DAVE: I started playing in children's theatre in the 1980’s, it was not just convenient for me but also the children could easily try it themselves. I have been in the UOGB half my life.         WILL: I loved the sound of it and its size. Also that in those days no-one else played the uke, it  was a bit different, which appealed to me.                                                                        PETER: I used to play the guitar for 20 years, then in 1989 I saw a ukulele and bought it and started learning to play.                                                                                            GEORGE: I have played the ukulele since I was 6 years old.                                                                                                                                                                                                               RICHIE: 30 anni fa, perché ero interessato a suonare con l’UOGB.
   DAVE: Ho iniziato suonando nei teatri per bambini negli anni ’80. Non era utile solo a me, ma anche ai bambini che potevano provare a suonarlo da soli. Ho suonato con l’UOGB per metà della mia vita.
   WILL: MI piaceva il suo suono e le sue dimensioni. Inoltre in quel periodo nessuno suonava l’ukulele e mi piaceva farmi notare nella mia diversità.
   PETER: Suonavo la chitarra da 20 anni, poi nel 1989 ho visto e comprato un ukulele, iniziando poi ad imparare a suonarlo.
   GEORGE: Suono l’ukulele da quando ho 6 anni.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      
5. How did you learn to play the ukulele?  Did you use the internet, books, DVD? Quando avete acquistato il vostro primo ukulele, come avete iniziato a capire come si suona?  Dove vi siete orientati per imparare a suonarlo? Internet, libri, dvd… o altro?                                   RICHIE: 30 years ago, bought by the UOGB as they were cheaper wholesale. I learnt by adapting my knowledge of chords on the guitar to the ukulele. The Internet and DVDs did not exist then…                                                                                                                             WILL: I had a short 10 page book called 'How to Play the Ukulele' which I learned from. Then I bought a chord dictionary and that was that.                                                          PETER: In 1989 I bought my first ukulele and initially I used the techniques that I learned on the guitar such as finger picking, there was no internet at that time and very few tuition books!  GEORGE: I didn’t buy a ukulele until 1985. My earlier instruments were all gifts. I started by playing pieces of music that I liked, and gradually got better at playing those same pieces.I had sheet music with chord windows included.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       RICHIE: 30 anni fa, comprato direttamente dall’UOGB perché era più conveniente. Ho imparato adattato la mia conoscenza  degli accordi sulle chitarra agli ukulele. Internet e i DVD non esistevano ai tempi…
   WILL: Avevo un libretto di dieci pagine intitolato “Come suonare l’ukulele” da cui ho studiato. Poi ho comprato un dizionario di accordi e il gioco fu fatto.
   PETER: Nel 1989 ho comprato il mio primo ukulele e inizialmente usavo le tecniche che avevo imparato con la chitarra come il finger-picking; non c’era internet ai tempi e pochissimi manuali educativi.
   GEORGE: Non ho comprato ukulele fino al 1985. I miei primi strumenti erano tutti dei regali. Ho iniziato suonando pezzi musicali che mi piacevano, diventando sempre più bravo in questi stessi pezzi. Avevo della musica scritta con gli accordi inclusi.                                                                                                                                                                                                                  
6. What kind of music do you like to play with your ukulele?  Which size of ukulele do you prefer? Che genere di musica preferite suonare con l’ukuele? Qual è la vostra taglia preferita di ukulele (sopranino, soprano, concert, tenore, baritono, banjolele…)?                        RICHIE: I like to play funk or Jazz on the baritone ukulele. My preference is for the baritone.   WILL: I like the little ones, soprano, piccolo etc.                                                               PETER: I like to play songs that I write myself on my ukulele and I prefer to play my wooden soprano.                                                                                                             GEORGE: I like to play jazz, rock, classical, contemporary music. I usually play a tenor, although I own and play all the other sizes from sopranino to bass.                                                                                                                                                                                                         
   RICHIE: Preferisco l’ukulele baritono e mi piace suonarci musica funk o jazz.
   WILL: Mi piacciono quelli piccoli, soprano, piccolo, ecc.
   PETER: Mi piacere suonare canzoni che compongo io stesso con il mio ukulele e preferisco suonare il mio soprano di legno.
   GEORGE: Mi piace suonare jazz, rock, classica e contemporanea. Normalmente suono un tenore, ma posseggo e uso tutte le altre taglie dal sopranino al basso.                                                                                                                                                                                                    
       
7. You’ve surely played a lot of types of ukuleles.  Can you describe to us the differences between them? Voi che avete sicuramente provato diversi modelli di ukulele, potreste descrivermi la differenza secondo voi?                                                                             RICHIE: Some of them are cheap, some of them are expensive. There is no direct correlation between price and quality, but even the worst sounding or hardest to play will have some comedy value.                                                                                                        GEORGE: I used to take a soprano ukulele everywhere with me. It was portable and easy to fit in my luggage. For improvisation or solo playing I have come to prefer ukuleles tuned like a tenor guitar or viola. The type of strings makes a huge difference. Light strings are great for renaissance music, but to get the volume for rock music and jazz then sometimes a heavier string is better. Perhaps a longer scale length instrument makes the tuning between the strings easier. Thus a tenor, though tuned the same as a soprano, might have better intonation.                                                                                                                                                           
   RICHIE: Alcuni di loro sono economici, alcuni sono cari. Non c’è una correlazione precisa tra il prezzo e la qualità, ma anche quello che suona peggio o che è più difficile da suonare può avere un valore a livello di performance.
   GEORGE: Ero solito portare un ukulele soprano con me ovunque andavo. Era facile da trasportare e mettere nei bagagli. Per l’improvvisazione e le performance soliste sono arrivato a preferire gli ukulele intonati come chitarra tenore o viola. Il tipo di corde fa un’enorme differenza. Le corde sottili sono ottime per la musica rinascimentale, ma per ottenere la potenza di volume per il rock e il jazz sono migliori delle corte più pesanti. Forse uno strumento a scale più ampia rende l’accordatura delle corde più semplice: un tenore accordato allo stesso modo di un soprano potrebbe avere migliore intonazione.                                                                                                                                                                                    
8. Which ukulele size do you suggest for beginners? Quale taglia di ukulele consigliereste a chi deve iniziare?                                                                                                                     RICHIE: As a solo instrument, probably a tenor or concert. If you're learning with other people, the soprano.                                                                                                               WILL: I think a soprano or concert size is best, but it depends on the size of your sausage fingers.                                                                                                                                PETER: I think the soprano is best as it is most portable!                                            GEORGE: Probably a soprano. Someone with large hands might want a concert size, thinking that the frets are further apart, but the further you go up the neck of the instrument the closer the frets get together so it really doesn’t matter what size you start with, it’s more a question of how high you want to go.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     
   RICHIE: Come strumento solista, probabilmente un tenore o un concert. Se si impara con altre persone, un soprano.
   WILL: Penso che un soprano o un concert siano i migliori, ma dipende dalla dimensione delle dita.
   PETER: Penso che il soprano sia il migliore e il più maneggevole.
   GEORGE: Probabilmente il soprano. Chi ha mani grandi potrebbe preferire una taglia concert, pensando che i tasti siano più distanti tra loro, ma più si sale verso il capotasto i tasti si fanno più vicini quindi non ha molta importanza con qualche taglia si inizia, ma più che altro quando in alto si vuole andare.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      
9. What’s your favorite ukulele brand? Which brand would you suggest for beginners and less experienced players? Oltre alla taglia dell’ukulele, quale marca raccomandereste a chi è alle prime armi e quale a coloro che vogliono uno strumento valido per suonare seriamente, facendo serate dal vivo?                                                                                                 GEORGE: I have instruments by Kala, Marshall Stapleton, Pete Howlett, iuke, Lanikai, and strings by Aquila. I’m looking forward to getting some new instruments I’ve had built from Marco (https://it-it.facebook.com/anticaukuleleria) in Italy. My advice to beginners is get one which feels good to you and which you can afford. Makala is a good inexpensive but accurately made starter instrument. If you can afford a model with a wood top rather than a plywood top that makes it a better sound.                                                                                                           RICHIE: I have to say Stevens of Munich, as I play one. I would recommend a brand like Kala, or Lanakai to start with.                                                                                                       DAVE: I usually play a Gibson style 2 soprano and often use Aquila strings made in Italy!  WILL: As a beginner go for a Kala (or a Makala if you've not got too much spare cash)  PETER: Kala is my favourite brand and I would recommend them to beginners.                                                                                                                                                                                   GEORGE: Ho strumenti Kala, Marshall Stapleton, Pete Howlett, iuke, Lanikai e corde Aquila. Ho intenzione di prendere alcuni nuovi strumenti che ho costruito dall’Antica Ukuleleria di Marco (Italia). Il mio consiglio per i principianti è di sceglierne uno che li faccia sentire a proprio agio e che possano permettersi di comprare. I Makala sono strumenti per iniziare poco costosi e accuratamente costruiti. Se ci si può permettere un modello con la cassa in legno piuttosto che in compensato, il suo sarà migliore.
   RICHIE: Dico Stevens (Monaco di Baviera) perché ne suono uno di questa marca. Per iniziare suggerisco un Kala o un Lanakai.
   DAVE: Normalmente suono un soprano Gibson style 2 e uso spesso corde Aquila prodotte in Italia!
   WILL: Come principiante è meglio andare su un Kala (o un Makala se non si hanno troppi soldi).
   PETER: Kala è la mia marca preferita e la consiglierei ai principianti.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 
10. Which parts of the ukulele are important (strings, wood, bridge…) to increase the quality?  How do we understand if our ukulele is a good ukulele?Quali sono i parametri (tipo di legno, corde, tastiera, ponte, ecc…) che l’ukulele deve avere per essere considerato buono? A quali caratteristiche guardate voi maggiormente?                                                                     RICHIE: In order of priority: the tuners should be geared, not friction pegs. It should be made of  solid wood, not plywood. The intonation should be good, that is, the open string and the same string fretted at the 12th fret should the same, only an octave higher. Strings and the bridge can always be changed, if necessary. You will know when you have a good uke in your hands, it's when you don't want to put it down!                                                                     WILL: Check that the 12th fret plays a clear octave above the open string. Usually a good sign if it does.                                                                                                                      PETER: A good bridge is important and the right wood, ideally Koa but since this is rare, mahogany is good and gives good intonation.                                                       GEORGE: The strings are very important. Good strings on a cheap instrument is better than cheap stings on an expensive instrument. The material which the top of the instrument is made is also important. If it’s good wood it can sound a lot better. There are a lot of ideas about what makes a good ukulele but I find that they can be theoretical and there is a simple point which seems to be the important one for me. I find that with a good ukulele, I don’t want to put it down but I keep playing it. If it makes an attractive sound that keeps me involved.                                                                                                                                                                            
    RICHIE: In ordine di priorità: l’accordatore dovrebbe essere meccanico e non con piroli a frizione. Lo strumento dovrebbe essere di legno e non di compensato. L’intonazione deve essere adeguata e l’intonazione delle ottave distribuite correttamente. Le corde e il ponte possono sempre essere cambiati, se necessario. Ti rendi conto di avere un buon ukulele in mano quando non riesci a smettere di suonare!
    WILL: Verificate che il dodicesimo tasto suoni chiaramente un’ottava sopra alla prima corda. Di solito questo è un segno che lo strumento è buono.
    PETER: Un buon ponte è importante e il legno deve essere quello giusto, idealmente il koa ma dal momento che è raro, il mogano ne fa bene le veci e dà una buona intonazione.
    GEORGE: Le corde sono molto importanti: è meglio avere buone corde su strumenti economici che corde economiche su strumenti cari. Il materiale con cui è fatto lo strumento è altrettanto importante: se è un buon legno, il suono è migliore. Ci sono molte idee su cosa renda buono un ukulele ma trovo che siano solo delle teorie e per me è importante un solo punto: se ho in mano un buon ukulele non mi viene voglia di rimetterlo a posto e lo continuo a suonare, se produce un suono piacevole che mantiene viva la mia attenzione.                                                                                                                                                                                         
11. Ukulele has become so popular in Italy and all over the world recently: What do you think about this and what are the reasons it’s growing? Abbiamo assistito, in questi ultimi anni, ad una diffusione crescente dell’ukulele in Italia e nel mondo: secondo voi, a che cosa si deve questo boom?                                                                                                                   GEORGE: The ukulele is like a little pet, or even a baby; it is cute, it makes noises which are reasonably pleasant even if you’re not experienced. People tend to have a good experience with a ukulele; it is a personal connection with the instrument and with music. It’s small, portable, affordable, pleasant and, as we say, it is like an iceberg, it seems to be one small size but it has a psychic presence which is far larger; there is some undefinable magic about it.  RICHIE: I think the popularity of the ukulele and social media are intrinsically linked, lots of people have realised what a fun thing music making can be, and the ukulele provides instant access. The Internet has accelerated this phenomenon, along with the fact we have been encouraging everyone to take it up during our globetrotting tours.                            DAVE: I think the popularity of the uke has been resurrected by the UOGB . The availability of cheap but playable ukes has also changed, when we started ukes were hard to find       WILL: It's great! Italy is a great country with a wonderful culture -the ukulele is sure to be a big there.                                                                                                                             PETER: It is great that it is so popular! Since there is no traditional repertoire you can play anything on it.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     
    GEORGE: L’ukulele è come un piccolo animale domestico o anche un bambino: produce suoni che sono ragionevolmente piacevoli anche se non si è soliti sentirli. Le persone hanno normalmente belle esperienze con un ukulele, è una connessione personale con lo strumento e con la musica. È piccolo, maneggevole, non costa troppo, ha un suono piacevole e, come diciamo noi, è come un iceberg: sembra di taglia piccola ma ha una presenza psichica che è molto più grande di quanto si veda, c’è una certa magia nell’ukulele.
    RICHIE: Penso che la popolarità dell’ukulele e i social media siano strettamente collegati, molte persone si sono rese conto di quanto sia divertente fare musica e l’ukulele ne consente un accesso istantaneo. Internet ha accelerato il fenomeno, oltre al fatto che noi incoraggiamo tutti a provarlo durante i nostri tour in giro per il mondo.
    DAVE: Credo che la popolarità dell’ukulele sia stata resuscitata dall’UOGB. Anche la disponibilità di ukulele economici ma validi è cambiata; quando noi iniziammo, era difficile trovarli.
    WILL: Bello! L’Italia è un grande paese con una cultura meravigliosa, è ovvio che l’ukulele abbia un buon successo lì.
    PETER: È una gran cosa che sia così popolare! Dal momento che non c’è un repertorio tradizionale ci si può suonare qualsiasi cosa.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       
12. Do you have any suggestions for ukulele beginners? Che consiglio vi sentite di dare a chi vuole incominciare a suonare l’ukulele, o comunque è alle prime armi?                               GEORGE: Here’s a suggestion: Learn three songs or pieces of music, and be able to play them all the way through at a consistent speed. Make sure that you have them in the right key for your voice, and make the effort to transpose them into a key which suits your voice if they’re too high or too low. Get some playing and performing experience; take your songs to the public somehow. Play your three songs. Leave the strongest song to the last, and make the music come alive through your performance.                                                                   RICHIE: Buy Will Grove White's book -Get Plucky with the Ukulele.                               WILL: Have fun! Don't get tied down to rules and remember to enjoy it! If it gets frustrating, go and eat some ice cream.                                                                                                  DAVE: My advice to a new player is give up and get an accordion! Haha!                     PETER: Make sure you have fun!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     
    GEORGE: Ecco un suggerimento: imparate tre canzoni o pezzi musicali e siate in grado di suonare tutti uno dopo l’altro ad una velocità consistente. Accertatevi che siano nella giusta intonazione per la vostra voce e fate lo sforzo di trasportarlo in una tonalità che si adatta alla vostra voce se è troppo alto o troppo basso. Fate delle esperienze con il pubblico: suonate le vostre canzoni, lasciando la migliore per ultima e fate in modo che la musica prenda vita durante la vostra performance.
    RICHIE: Comprate il libro di Will “Get Plucky with the Ukulele”
    WILL: Divertitevi! Non attaccatevi troppo alle tecniche e alle regole. Se diventa frustrante fate una pausa e mangiate un gelato.
    DAVE: Il mio consiglio per un nuovo suonatore è di lasciar perdere e di comprare una fisarmonica! Haha!

         GEORGE: Be careful! Once you have acquired one ukulele you will feel the need to buy                    another one. It could be the start of an addition. Keep some self control. Don’t forget that it is              all about the music, and not the instrument. And… play the music that you like. Everybody has          different tastes. Develop from the position of strength that is your own taste. 

         RICHIE: Keep the faith… 

         PETER: Music is a very wonderful thing! To be able to play music is to be doubly blessed -                good luck with your playing.

         GEORGE: State attenti! Una volta che avrete acquistato un ukulele sentirete il bisogno di                  comprarne un altro. Potrebbe essere l’inizio di una dipendenza. Mantenete il controllo e non              dimenticate che è una questione di musica, non di strumento. E… suonate musica che vi                      piace. Ognuno ha gusti diversi. Partite dal punto forte che è il proprio gusto musicale.

         RICHIE: Continuate ad avere fede…

        PETER: La musica è una cosa meravigliosa! Essere anche capaci di suonarla è una doppia                benedizione. Buona fortuna con la vostra musica!
